What is a medium peel?

A peel is a skin treatment by exfoliation which aims to reduce signs of aging (wrinkles, fine lines), acne scars and helioderma (sun-related skin aging and brown spots).

There are two types of peels: superficial peeling and medium peel.

The medium peel is a deep treatment of the skin, which requires preparation of the skin beforehand, and which results in social exclusion for several days, while the skin regenerates. The average peel can be carried out once or twice a year maximum. Superficial peeling, for its part, can be carried out once a month and without prior preparation.

Un medium peel consists of applying a solution based on trichloroacetic acid to the skin of the face, which has the effect of eliminating the layers of the skin down to the dermis with the aim of triggering the natural healing and regeneration process of the skin.

Medium peels cause stimulation of collagen production and thus allow a skin renewal more or less deep. The medium peel can thus help to fade skin imperfections such as wrinkles, spots, certain scars, and tightens enlarged pores.

Areas treated with a medium peel

The medium peel is generally performed on the face, to treat skin marked by scars and wrinkles, particularly on the forehead, cheeks and around the eyes. It can also be used to fade deep scars on le dos.

It is not used to treat the neck and décolleté areas.

Results of a medium peel

Le medium peel is an effective cosmetic treatment to improve the appearance of sun damaged skin, fading sun spots, wrinkles and scars. It can also help reduce blemishes and acne marks.

The results appear approximately one month after the session.

Treatment can be carried out up to twice a year, one and a half months apart.

Indications and contraindications to a medium peel

The medium peel is carried out in winter, on untanned skin. The patient should avoid all exposure to the sun during the weeks preceding treatment, as well as during the peeling and healing period following treatment.

The medium peel should not be performed on a patient with a skin infection.

It is also contraindicated for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Technique used for a medium peel

Medium peels carried out in our dermato-aesthetic clinic are carried out with trichloroacetic acid (TCA).

Course of a medium peeling session

Peeling is a medical procedure that requires certain precautionary measures. Before considering a medium peel, a prior consultation must be made with a doctor at our clinic. During this interview, the doctor will suggest the most appropriate peel according to your problems and expected results, but also according to the social exclusion that you can afford (particularly in the case of medium and deep peels).

A 24-hour reflection period must be respected, after which you can make an appointment for your session.

Preparation phase

The skin must be prepared 2 to 4 weeks before treatment, by applying creams prescribed by the doctor. This preparation phase is essential to avoid the side effects of the peel, in particular the appearance of pigment spots.

Application

During your peeling session, the practitioner begins by cleansing your skin, then applies a protective cream to sensitive areas such as the corners of the mouth and the sides of the nose.

The doctor then applies trichloroacetic acid (TCA) using a cotton swab to the area to be treated. You may feel a more or less painful burning sensation during application. Several passes may be necessary (2 or 3).

The skin appearance is that of a “sunburn” with sometimes the presence of edema and crusts.

Post-session

Following the medium peeling session, the skin peels and flakes, giving way in 5 to 7 days to fine pinkish skin. During this period, the doctor will monitor the treatment, using creams to control the elimination of old skin.

FAQ

A medium peel is a cosmetic treatment that uses a chemical solution to remove the top layer of skin. It is a treatment that aims to improve the appearance of sun damaged skin, age spots, wrinkles and scars. It can also help reduce blemishes and acne.

The main risk associated with an average peel is a risk of burning if the concentration of the product is too high. This can give way to scars and pigment spots. In rare cases, peeling can lead to a skin infection. It is important to follow your doctor's instructions during the recovery period to reduce the risk of complications.

There are two types of peels:

  • Superficial peeling, which uses a milder concentration of acids, such as glycolic acid or linoleic acid, to remove the top layers of skin.
  • The medium peel, which uses a chemical solution to remove the top layer of skin.

The most effective peel is the medium TCA peel, which uses a high concentration of trichloroacetic acid to remove the upper layers of the skin. It can provide significant results on the appearance of your skin. However, it is a profound treatment that requires certain precautions and can have an impact on your social life during the days following treatment.
